By the way, can I just say, my new computer is so fast. It's not just fast, it's wicked fast. (and I can say that now, because I live in Boston). |

| Say Hello to my Little Friend (and help me name him/her) |
[Apr. 10th, 2006|01:07 am] |
I am writing this entry from my brand-new laptop! This is a huge technology step for me, made neccessary by my 5 year old iMac (not the nice new ones with the flat screens and the fast processors, the old iMac, the one that used to come in colors. The computer that took 5 minutes to bring up internet explorer and turned off every 5 seconds) So, due to the combination of my craptastic computer and my computer geek boyfriend and my slightly bigger bank account, I finally gave in and got a better computer! I am still pretty in love with it and all of its shiny new-ness. (Though, I have to admit, typing on it is a bit of a challenge and if you even knew how many typos I have made while typing this sentence (as well as accidentally hitting the caps lock button, you would not believe it)
Anyway, my new computer needs a name... I haven't decided yet if it is a boy or a girl... I think a guy, because it is grey, and that is kind of a manly color, right? So,feel free to post name suggestions and I will take them into consideration.
But enough about my new laptop. Dan was here this weekend! This is the first time that he has been up since I moved to Boston, so it was so exciting to have him here. I feel so lucky that I have had a chance to host so many of my friends since I have been here and have had a blast with Jenn, Julia and Erin. But the whole thing just didn't feel complete until Dan had been here and seen my new place. And now he has, and like when Jenn and Julia and Erin all left, there is a big empty Maryland hole now that they are gone.
BUt having Dan here was great. I took him to Margaritas, home of what, in my opinion, are the best Margaritas in New England (not Fajitas n' 'Ritas, like the guidebooks say, so don't be fooled). We went to Best Buy, where I bought my currently nameless lappy, speakers for my iPod, an external harddrive (and if you are sitting there saying "a what?", know that I was too, until Dan used it to transfre everything from my old computer to this one with a few clicks of mouse... well, worth the investment. So, after spending an insane amount of money there, I took Dan out to his birthday dinner at Top of the Hub, one of the best restaurants in Boston...
If you know me, and you know Dan, you know that we love food. And that we are crazy about good food. So i am going to go on in great detail about our amazing dinner, so if you don't care about food, skip to the next paragraph. So, anyway, we got a 7 course tasting menu. Yes, 7. That was not a typo. I had fois gras for the first time ever, and it was AMAZING! I never understood what people made such a big deal about, but now, I totally get it. We also had tuna, steak, halibut, an avocado and lobster salad, a beet salad (beets with tomato and gorgonzola cheese. I don't like beets, tomatos or gorgonzola cheese, but the salad was fantastic). Top of the Hub is located on the 52nd floor of the Prudential Center (the Pru, for all of you who know Boston lingo). The view is unreal. The service was impeccable. Just absolutely perfect. I enjoyed the dinner so much, I didn't even freak out driving through city traffic on the way home. And for anyone that has ever been in a car with me in a city, you should know what an accomplishment that is. So, long story short, dinner was fantastic.
Today, we went back into the city to do the freedom trail, which I didn't get to do with Jules and Erin when they were here. Sadly, it was a really cold and windy weekend, so walking around the city was not the most pleasant, but we had a good time. I love historical stuff... Dan promised he would come back this summer and we would do a proper Boston day with Swan boats and actually finishing the trail, not petering out at Quincey Market and having a beer at the Purple Shamrock because it was too cold t make it all the way to Bunker Hill. However, even if we didn't make it through the whole thing, we did get to see lots of famous patriots' graves (but no pictures... tacky), we looked at the Ruth's Chris steakhouse which is now inside the Old State House (weird, but cool), I got my picture standing with the statue of the donkey marking the place where Andrew Jackson got called a jackass and adopted the symbol of the Donkey for the Democrats (!!!!!), I also got a picture of Dan standing in oppositon to the Donkey (there are footprints with little elephants on them that you can stand on. I didn't get a picture of me with the Donkey and Dan standing in opposition because there were no English-speaking non-creepy tourists there to take it for us. Sad. Also, we got cream puffs from Beard Papas. Amazing. Also, I introduced Dan to the world of Dunkin' Donuts in Boston. On every street corner. (I think he really liked his turbo-hot coffee!) So, all in all, Boston was a good day.
And now, I have to get to bed, as I am waking up at 6:30AM to go to the gym and work out (gotta sweat off that fois gras). An even bigger surprise then the fact that I drove through the city of Boston without having a panic attack... I work out at the gym about 5 times a week, I eat whole grain foods on a semi-regular basis, and I don't drink soda anymore. I am still getting used to it, but so far, so good.
Also, on a random note, I just saw Fever Pitch on HBO tonight. Seeing it again, now that I live in Boston and can go "ooh! I was there. I was there today!" made it a much cooler movie.
Don't forget to give me lappy name suggestions!

| Wanna buy a duck? A what? A duck... |
[Mar. 24th, 2006|05:40 pm] |
Found in many lakes and ponds, ducks are a common site the world over. Known for their famous quack, ducks tend to congregate in flocks or go off on their own in pairs. As a duck, you may seem friendly at times but will not hesitate to bite if someone is bothering you. Your ability to swim and preference for being in crowds are some reasons why you are a duck. | | The dulcet tones of Curry construction | ] | What is your cell phone ring tone? One of the ones that came stored in my phone when I bought it. It is extremely obnoxious. But since I don't have multimedia messaging on my phone, I can't buy new ones. Stupid technology.
What is the greatest thing that could happen to you right now? I would get offered a fantastic well-paying job back in Maryland.
Staples or Office Max? Staples. Purely because of the Easy Button ad campaign. I have an easy button in my office. It makes me smile.
If you could travel anywhere- where would you go? Venice. I went to Italy in high school, but we didn't get to Venice and I have always wanted to go.
Where in the World IS Carmen SanDiego? I always pictured her in South America... chilling in Brazil with a tropical drink in hand being serenaded by the guys in Rockapella. Either that, or she is in prison (perhaps because her itinerary's loaded up with moving violations?)
When was the last time you cried? and why? At the wedding I went to last weekend. I cried during the ceremony, then during the first dance and the father-daughter dance, then the mother-son dance. The wedding was the same day as the one year anniversary of my Mom's death, so I think that might have had something to do with me being so emotional.
What's one secret from your childhood you swore never to tell? (it doesn't matter now) In preschool, I wanted to be the tightrope walker in a circus play, so I hid the tightrope walker costume so that only I would be able to find it, hence guaranteeing myself the prettiest costume. Sneaky, I know.
If you had to pick a wedding song now what would it be? "When you say nothing at all" the aucoustic version by Ronan Keating. (if the person I was marrying was Dan) If it was someone else, I would probably want "At Last" by Etta James.
Who is the funniest person you know? Dan. He makes me laugh more than anyone else I know. I think Erin would be in a close 2nd place because she is always hilarious.
If the world was your oyster and any job was open to you what would you want to do? If the job was open (and didn't involve me having to have a whole lot of money), I might want to run for office somewhere. Either a local office (because most governing gets done at the local level anyway), or as a senator because then I could have some influence on foreign policy. Or I would love to work at the DCCC or in a political consulting firm.
What would you change about yourself? Why? Physically, I would either make my legs 2 inches shorter or my feel 2 sizes smaller, which would make my life much easier and less expensive (having to always buy pants in Long inseams means you are spending at least $60, and have you ever tried to find size 11 shoes? I can tell you it is no fun)
What one thing would you change about a friend? Who? and Why? I wish that Julia were taller and had size 11 shoes, so that we could share clothes, shoes, and accessories. Also, I wish that Julia had applied to schools in Boston, instead of Chicago, which increases the distance between us.
What one person would you like to spend the night with no strings attached. I wouldn't want to have a one night stand, that's just not something I would do. And I don't think there is such a thing as sex with no strings attached.
What one realistic thing will you never do? Enjoy driving. I hate it. Period.
What one value do you have that you will not compromise on? Sleeping with somebody I don't love.
How ambitious are you? Not as ambitious as I used to think I was. I have ambitious goals for marriage and children, but I am not as ambitious when it comes to career.
What are the 3 most important values you've learned from your family? 1. Acceptance. 2. Perseverence. 3. Affection.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?- 10? 5 yrs - I'll be 27. 10 yrs - I'll be 32.
What purpose does money serve in your life? Having it gives me the ability to do other things besides work and worry.
Favorite politician that is still alive? I know I can't say Newt Gingrich because he's a Republican (even though I know him better than he knows himself, thanks to my 30 pg. paper), so I'll say Russ Feingold. |

I am flying in on the night of Feb. 16th at around 9:30PM and will be flying back to Boston on Monday Feb. 20th at 11:55AM. So that is 3 1/2 whole days of Maryland goodness!
I am so excited to see everyone again! I miss you guys! |

| | Fix you- Coldplay | ] | Well, it just wouldn't be me if I was updating my live journal for any reason other than to put off things I really need to be doing...
For anyone not in the know about my ultra-fascinating life, I am now working right outside Boston at Curry College as a Resident Director. I just got up here on the 3rd and had my first (very long) day of work today. Curry is definitely a huge change from Maryland. It is tiny (1,800 students), it is so far away (I know one person here in Boston), but I think I am going to like it.
The RD staff is really cool so far... the other new RD on staff, Jen, and I have bonded over being the "new people" as well as our mutual love of "whose wedding is it anyway", politics, history and place settings among other things, so I had a fun little night of eating dinner at her apartment (which by the way is SO much bigger than mine) and then coming back here to my place to stare at my road atlas to try and figure out where the closest target was.
Speaking of my tiny apartment, I will hopefully have photos up soon to show anyone who cares what it looks like, but as of right now, I can't get my camera to connect to my computer (where is Dan when I need him?). But it is an OK space for just one person... and I am finally mostly unpacked and have almost everything I need.
I just discovered that Julia and Erin are coming to visit some time over Maryland's spring break, which I am so psyched about. Anyone else who wants to visit, please let me know. I miss all you Marylanders like you wouldn't believe!
I am hoping that I will get to sleep sometime tonight, as I was back to my old insomniac self last night and had a long day of training today, but I really have a lot of work to do. I need to clean out my office which is a disaster and filled with stacks of unidentified papers from the previous RD. I also have "homework" to do for tomorrow's training... reading sections of the massive RD Manual and writing welcome notes to my new RAs. So, yeah, I should get back to work. But I am sure as I begin office hours, there will be many LJ updates to fill the time.
MIss you, everyone! |

The idea of not having to make uncomfortable small talk while brushing my teeth of washing my hands, of not having to take huge hair clogs out of the drain every time I shower... the mere thought of a constant water temperature and decent water pressure... not having to wear shower shoes and carry all of my toiletries in a bucket.... so exciting. The though of even possibly having a bath tub!! Exciting beyond words!
Yeah, that is sad, I know. But I don't care, I am looking forward to it.
I can't believe I graduate in less than 3 weeks. Total craziness. |

| So, Elizabeth was on Bravo |
[Oct. 19th, 2005|10:38 pm] |
Things that I have learned tonight while "studying" for my foreign relations exam:
1) Foreign Relations are not nearly as interesting as the politics of Elizabethan England as shown by the movie Elizabeth.
2) popped collars do not seem to bother me nearly as much when worn in conjunction with a doublet and worn by Josef Fiennes... dreamy...
3) Studying is much more enjoyable when paired with a good movie (Like Elizabeth) and a bottle of wine.... and without the studying part
4) Getting 2 A's on exams does not increase one's motivations to study for an exam.. especially when one only needs to pass 2/4 classes to graduate.
5) I have a very forgiving spirit... though I was angry with Bravo for showing nothing but "celebrity poker showdown" recently, between the 4 day west wing marathon and this well-times showing of Elizabeth, I am willing to forgive them and love bravo with all my slightly-tipsy heart
6) I am an obscenely irresponsible person, because I REALLY need to study for this exam...
7) I really wish that I lived back in the 1600's because then I could wear the beautiful dresses that they get to wear... or I could be a period actress, that would work also
8) I wish that I could stand up and say "play a volta" and josef feinnes would appear in all of his mysterious badboy glory and we could break out into choreographed dance.
Sorry to have wasted everyone's time with this worthless entry. |

| | Such Great Heights | ] | 1. Name someone with the same birthday as you. Sophia Loren, who at 70-something is STILL hotter than I will ever be... how sad for me.
2. Where was your first kiss? My first real (but really, really bad) first kiss was in my driveway after my 16th birthday.
3. Have you ever seriously vandalized someone else's property? No. Anyone who has ever met me in RA-mode knows how I feel about vandalism
4. Have you ever hit someone of the opposite sex? Not really... just that annoying girl phase in middle/high school where you hit guys on the arm every time they annoy you, which is pretty much all the time when you are dealing with middle/high school guys. Though, I do hope that one day I will get to slap a guy really hard in the face.. because it always looks so satisfying on TV.
5. Have you ever sung in front of a large number of people? Dear God no. I am a horrible singer. I only sing as a member of the chorus in musicals when there are a large number of other people to mask my awful voice.
6. What's the first thing you notice about the preferred sex? height
7. What really turns you on? A sense of humor.
8. What do you order at Starbucks? Dunkin' Dounts? I don't ever go to starbucks. But at dunkin' donuts a boston cream or munchkins
9. What is your biggest mistake? There are just too many to pick just one. And what hasn't killed me has only made me stronger... and more emotionaly closed off
10. Have you ever hurt yourself on purpose? No
11. Say something totally random about yourself. I sneeze three times after I eat
12. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity? Nope.
13. Do you still watch kiddy movies or tv shows? Disney movies on occasion, but that's pretty much it. Living with my neice for three years and watching every kiddie movie and TV show under the sun over and over... I just can't take it anymore.
14. Did you have braces? Yes I did. And my dentist who just took out my wisdom teeth asked me why I had never had braces... so apparently those 3 years were a total waste of time and money.
15. Are you comfortable with your height? I am 2" taller than the average American Male. So no, being this tall really sucks for a variety of reasons.
16. What is the most romantic thing someone of the opposite sex has done for you? A homemade 4 course meal. With Dancing. Enough said.
17. When do you know it's love? When you can't imagine another day or night without them in your life.
18. Do you speak any other languages? haha. I took latin for 5 years... that got me a high verbal SAT score and a complete inability to understand or speak foreign languages
19. Have you ever been to a tanning salon? Once. Never again. So scary.
20. What magazines do you read? Cosmo because of its awesome trashiness. ESPN because it is always the only reading material at Dan's, and trashy magazines like US and In Touch when I hang out with Erin.
21. Have you ever ridden in a limo? Only for funerals. So, if I ever need a car for a happy occasion, I am going to have to find some other mode of transport, because in my mind limos = death
22. Has anyone you were really close to passed away? Yes. Many, many people.
23. Do you watch mtv? Not really. I am a VH1 kind of girl. (I love the 80's and 90's are the best shows ever)
24. What's something that really annoys you? Pretention.
25. What's something you really like? Really good food. Sushi, fresh bread, pasta.... really just food. It doesn't even need to be that good... that's just a bonus
26. Do you like Michael Jackson? I like his pre-scary face music. But now it just pains me to see his face.
27. Can you dance? Not particularly well, but that sure as hell doesn't stop me.
28. What's the latest you have ever stayed up? I pull all nighters like it's my job... and I have probably made it about 36-48 hours.
29. Have you ever been rushed by an ambulance into the emergency room? Yes. For my mysterious anaphylactic shock.
30. Do you actually read these when other people fill them out? Only when I am really really trying to procrastinate. But I am pretty sure no one reads mine either. |

[Sep. 18th, 2005|10:03 pm] |
JENN AND JULIA ROCK. THEY ROCK. HARDCORE. SERIOUSLY.
For my birthday, the suprised me by taking me to Annapolis to have High tea in a colonial tavern. We had our own pots of tea (and got to pick from 20 flavors), we got our choice of quiche or soup (best cream of crab EVER), and then we got a 3 tiered tray of scones, finger sandwiches and tiny cakes, cookies and truffles.
This place was so amazing. The teacup and saucer sets were all different patterns, the tea spoons had tiny tea cups and teapots on the tops, the sugar cubes were molded into card suits (hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs). And the tea was serious tea. Real tea. Not the crappy tea bag stuff. It was incredibly good.
I can't think of an outing more fitting. It was so awesome and I had the best time. And I will state again for the record that Jenn and Julia rock, a lot. I love you guys, and thank you so much. |

| | My Life- Beatles | ] | I really can't sleep, which is most troublesome, as I have to be up in a few hours for work. I just hate these days where I am working 12-6Am then sleeping til 12, then working at IKEA from 1-10PM. I mean, you can't tell me i ma wasting the day, as I am working for 14 hours of it, but when I get off, I don't want to go to bed, I want to DO something.
I want time to see all of my friends. I don't need to go out drinking, I don't need to go anywhere special, I just wish I had time to have all of my friends around me, to just bask in all the love and laughter and happiness that occurs whenever I get to see all those people who are so near and dear to my heart. I feel so sappy saying it, but I really just want to have, like, a picnic or a cookout. Something that reminds me of all the family holiday parties of my youth, ones that I am sure I will never be attending ever again. Well, not Tavenner functions at any rate.
Drinking is fine and it has its place, but I just want to talk. I want to drink up the details of everyone's lives, hear what's been happening with them. I want to be able to close my eyes and hear the sounds of all of my friends talking and laughing and having a good time and knowing that I was the one that brought them all together. I want to nest.
I don't know what it is that is making me feel this way. Homesickness, I suppose. I just want to establish some roots again, have a home, have traditions. I want a night of the week to be something incredibly cheesy, like boardgame night. I want home-cooked meals (made by someone else, of course), I want to open the door after a long day at work and say "Honey, I'm home." or "Roommate, I'm home", and have someone there to talk to and ask me about my day, rather than walking into an empty apartment with the doors all shut.
I miss my friends. I don't get to see you all nearly as much as I would like. I miss you, and I hope that we can all get together soon. Your laughter and your friendship are what keep me glued together and keep me sane. |

| | None, music is not allowed at the desk | ] | I am in the midst of my first ever shift at the Desk for CVS. Unfortunately, my first ever shift is a graveyard from 12-6AM, which is a little bit tiring, but at last I don't have too many people needing help, so I can familiarize myself with everything. I get the feeling I will be updating quite a lot since I have so many hours here at the desk with not a whole lot to do, so I know you are all looking forward to my more frequent postings.
Erin, bless her, just came to visit me and brought me coke and some food and passed an hour or so talking with me. IT was so good to see her again, because even though we work together now, I never see her. Also, she was able to answer all of my CVS related questions, of which I have many. I have already been asked so mnay random questions I have no idea how to answer off the top of my head (Are there any good water parks around here? Do you know the exact directions to get there and how much tickets are? Do you know how I can get to BWI airport from here? How much would a cab from here to BWI be?) How am I supposed to know all this stuff? They all seemed amazed when I had to consult the internet to find the information for them. People.
I just got back this afternoon from a weekend in New Jersey with Julia to celebrate her brother's wedding. It was so much fun! I haven't been to a wedding in years, so this was quite a treat. Great food, and Jules' family is SO nice and welcoming (and of course Julia and I got to dance all night at the reception). The wedding was really beautiful too, fueling my occasional "I want to get married" phases. A poufy dress and REALLY good food, I could totally handle that, as long as someone else was taking care of all the details (except the ones I actually cared about) and footing the bill, of course. Thus, it is now needless to say that I will not be getting married anytime soon, as the above qualifications are unlikely.
And now I am just killing time on this shift (3 1/2 hours to go!) and continuing this very boring and not too creative entry. The keyboard on this computer is kind of funky, so it is making it hard to type, but it is one of those keyboards with the very satisfying "click" sounds that I love. My Keyboard is pretty quiet. OK, now this is just getting non-sensical, so I am going to end this entry. Maybe later I will have something a little more interesting and well-formed to discuss.

| | You belong to me | ] | School is done for another semester, and here I am in New Leonardtown (for all of you who would like to visit me). Though I must say, it is no commons... it has its own crappy-reslife-old-and-busted charm. And it is nicer than Easton at any rate, so who am I to complain?
And now that I am at least mostly unpacked, I feel much better. And can I just say that Julia and I totally rocked on move-out/move-in day?! We moved us both out of Easton and into her room in St. Mary's and mine here (and neither building has an elevator) in about 6 hours! Total girl power.
The suitemates seem nice so far, though I have not seen all that much of them. Between IKEA 30 hours a week and Working the desks for Campus Visitor Services (CVS) for 20-30, I should be keeping myself pretty busy. Hopefully I will also make some money, unlike last summer, when all my money went to rent.
I am hoping that this will be a fun summer, filled with days at the pool, maybe a day at the beach with Jules and Dan (if I can get a day off from both IKEA and CVS and then have that day match a day when \Jules is not doing orientation and Dan is not working, on duty or working at his internship) and a few parties (2nd Annual Luau anyone?)
Speaking of Dan and his internship, though, everyone should IM him to congratulate him! He got a job on Capitol Hill with the Representative he wrote his 40 pages case study on last semester! And his first day of work was today. :)
OK, that is all the rambling I can think of at this moment. I must prepare for my 6PM "Team Meeting" for CVS where we are going to discuss our "team strategy" to do all the bulletin boards in the high rise dorms on North Campus. It ought to be a blast. But hopefully I will get to know some people, because right now I know no one outside of Godfried (who I don't even know that well) and Erin (who has RA training this whole week).
Til next time (which will undoubtedly be in a few months), I'm out.
